It Won’t Stop There

The Brits are phasing in a plan to require non-EU foreigners to carry identity cards with them.  While I support enforcement of immigration laws here and abroad, this is way beyond what people should feel comfortable with.

In fact, I see no reason to think it will stop there.  Once it is fully implemented for foreigners what’s the argument for not requiring identity cards of citizens?  The only arguments I can think of would require conceding that foreign residents have fewer legal protections than citizens.  This would send the left and the human rights lawyers into a tizzy.  So naturally instead of scrapping the bad idea they’ll require identity cards of everyone.
