The Left’s Preferred People List
In thinking about some of the debates I’ve had with leftists, I began to recognize the left doesn’t simply have favored special interest groups that are on equal footing with each other. There is actually a very clear hierarchy of groups worthy of deference and positive consideration in the leftwing worldview.
Interestingly, groups lower on the hierarchy will have their freedom and privileges squashed if it benefits the agenda of those higher up, even if the lower group might otherwise be a group favored by the left. And of course it goes without saying that offering a rational conservative argument against the agenda of top group relevant to a given issue is considered to be self-evident bigotry according the left’s worldview.
The hierarchy:
1. Lifestyle Minorities
Primarily consisting of sexual minorities, this group reigns supreme to the left. There is no group worthy of greater attention and deference. All other groups must go to the back of the bus.
2. Racial Minorities
Not all of them though. Mostly just blacks and hispanics (except Cubans, of course, because they are generally conservatives). While it’s tough for them to afoul of the left, it is possible. One example is when they overwhelmingly voted against gay marriage in California. And of course individuals who fail to toe the party line (Thomas Sowell, Clarence Thomas, etc.) are singled out for extra abuse.
3. Women
Unfortunately for the merely feminist, they have been falling down on the list of the left’s concerns. To rate as special, a woman really needs to also fall into groups 1 or 2. So, being a woman doesn’t automatically earn you the deference it once did. Just ask Hillary Clinton about how she was treated by her fellow leftists as First Lady compared to how she was treated as a candidate against Obama. Times have changed but her group profile didn’t. So sorry Hill.
4. Homeless
Despite the fact that they overwhelmingly have mental health and drug addiction problems (often both), the left persists in believing that they are rational and able to care for themselves and ought to be put in housing amid the rest of us. Just not in the neighborhood where the lefties live, of course. In the absence of being placed into free housing, though, the left feels they should be allowed to use municipal property as a bathroom.
5. Criminals
Oh, those poor multiple felons. Why is society so mean to them? Why can’t felons vote? Blah blah.
6. The Generic Poor
The plain old, generic poor just don’t rate that highly with the left. It’s not that they are completely ignored but they just don’t get the passion that the left puts into groups 1, 2 and 3.
Notice what isn’t on the list of leftist concerns? You. Me. Typical, average people who just want to go about our business and lead normal, productive American lives without meddling from the government or self-appointed busy bodies. Sucks to be us.
